A 1.8 million year history of Amazon vegetation

چکیده

During the Pleistocene, long-term trends in global climate were controlled by orbital cycles leading to high amplitude glacial-interglacial variability. The history of Amazonian vegetation during this period is largely unknown since no continuous record from lowland basin extends significantly beyond last glacial stage. Here we present a paleoenvironmental spanning 1800 kyr based on palynological data, biome reconstructions, and biodiversity metrics marine sediment core that preserves archive sediments Amazon River. Tropical rainforests dominated lowlands ka interchanging with surrounding warm-temperate tropical seasonal forests. Between 1000 ka, rainforest biomes drainage basin, along extensive riparian wetland vegetation. expansion occurred relatively warm Marine Isotope Stages 33 31 (ca. 1110 1060 ka), followed contraction both forests wetlands until ca. 800 ka. 400 low pollen concentration diversity assemblages renders difficult interpretation A strong synchronicity between changes was established around After interglacial association warmer temperatures higher CO2. cooler lower CO2 stages, expanded, presumably towards eastern Amazonia. While study provides evidence supporting significant savanna or steppe within periods, there composition some parts proportion deciduous elements, pointing less humid conditions and/or greater seasonality precipitation. Nevertheless, persisted periods. These findings confirm sensitivity CO2, temperature, moisture availability most suitable for warmest stages Mid Pleistocene Transition past kyr.

A 40-million-year history of atmospheric CO(2).

The alkenone-pCO2 methodology has been used to reconstruct the partial pressure of ancient atmospheric carbon dioxide (pCO2) for the past 45 million years of Earth's history (Middle Eocene to Pleistocene epochs). The present long-term CO2 record is a composite of data from multiple ocean localities that express a wide range of oceanographic and algal growth conditions that potentially bias CO2 ...

A 12-million-year temperature history of the tropical Pacific Ocean.

The appearance of permanent El Niño-like conditions prior to 3 million years ago is founded on sea-surface temperature (SST) reconstructions that show invariant Pacific warm pool temperatures and negligible equatorial zonal temperature gradients. However, only a few SST records are available, and these are potentially compromised by changes in seawater chemistry, diagenesis, and calibration lim...

Comment on "A 12-million-year temperature history of the tropical Pacific Ocean".

Zhang et al. (Reports, 4 April 2014, p. 84) interpret TEX86 and U(37)(K') paleotemperature data as providing a fundamentally new view of tropical Pacific climate during the warm Pliocene period. We argue that, within error, their Pliocene data actually support previously published data indicating average western warm-pool temperature similar to today and a reduced zonal gradient, referred to as...

Response to Comment on "A 12-million-year temperature history of the tropical Pacific Ocean".

Contrary to our conclusions, Ravelo et al. argue that our TEX86-based sea surface temperature (SST) records do not conflict with the supposition of "permanent El Niño-like" conditions during the early Pliocene. We show that the way Ravelo et al. treat the existing temperature data perpetuates an inaccurate impression of cooler Pacific warm-pool SSTs and low equatorial temperature gradients in t...
